Worship: A Journey of Intimacy

Of all the things that I look forward to when I get to heaven, the thing that I will enjoy the most is being united, being one with Jesus. I tremble with anticipation at experiencing intimacy with the lover of my soul.

Eph 5:31-32
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."   32 This is a profound mystery — but I am talking about Christ and the church.

Rev 19:7
For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.

This is a difficult concept for most men to grasp, that we, as the church, are His Bride. We will become one with him as a husband becomes one with his wife. Throughout the entire Bible there are parallels between the intimacy experienced by a husband and wife on the marital bed and Jesus’ desire to be one with us.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in Solomon’s Song of Songs. While this is a human love letter it is also a type of Christ and His bride.

1:2
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth — for your love is more delightful than wine.

 2:16
My lover is mine and I am his;

While the language of this book is much too intense for some, they can’t fathom how it relates to worship. Let’s not forget that the Greek word for worship Prokuneo literally means “turn to kiss”.
While I enjoy singing His praises with songs of exultation and rockin’ out while declaring His majesty and power, ultimately I long for those times when we go beyond the throne room and He invites us into the bridal chamber. There, all of time and space ceases to exist and I can experience His presence in an intimate, palpable way.

There are a couple of songs that stop my heart every time I hear them:

Behold You have come over the hills
Upon the mountains
To me You have run my beloved
You've captur'd my heart

Dance with me
O Lover of my soul
To the song of all songs
Romance me
O Lover of my soul
To the song of all songs

(Dance with Me by Chris DuPre)

My response to Him is this:
I don't know how
To say exactly how I feel
And I can't begin
To tell You what Your love has meant

I'm lost for words
Is there a way
To show the passion in my heart
Can I express
How truly great I think You are
My dearest Friend
Lord this is my desire
To pour my love on You

Like oil upon Your feet
Like wine for You to drink
Like water from my heart
I pour my love on You
If praise is like perfume
I'll lavish mine on You
‘Til ev’ry drop is gone
I'll pour my love on You

(Pour my Love on You by Dan Dean/Gary Sadler)

Let me quote 1 Cor 13:8 “But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.” Worship, our expression of love toward our groom, is forever.
